Last Week, students were recognized by school librarian, Mr. Michael Lashley, and school administration for their reading achievement during the Fall Semester at Brainerd. Over one hundred students were invited to attend the celebratory party based on their reading achievement. Mr. Lashley established two categories for the reading competition: GRADE-LEVEL competition and then TOP READERS individually. The GRADE-LEVEL competition was won by the Freshmen class which read approximately 367 books of the 1,360 books read over the course of the first semester.

Individual awards went presented to Davina Morris (12th), Arianna Grinnage (11th), Jah'mes Richardson(10th), and Edward Roeland Bencosme (9th). Mr. Edward Roeland Besncosme was also awarded $75 cash for being the TOP READER SCHOOL-WIDE. Congratulations to all our Brainerd readers. During the celebration students enjoyed hot wings, potato skins, pizza, and rolls which were donated by school partners, Heavenly Wings & Texas Roadhouse. Mr. Lashley encouraged students to continue to document their reading in their English class for awards to be given at the end-of-year celebration.

Holiday Mystery Read sponsored by Mr. Lashley

The students at Brainerd had the opportunity to participate in the first ever, Holiday Mystery Read through the efforts of school librarian, Mr. Michael Lashley. During December, when students arrived in the library they found shelves of books-- wrapped in holiday gift wrap. Students were asked to select a book for checkout--not knowing which kind of book they had chosen. Students were instructed to take the book home and place under the Christmas tree as a reminder to the whole family that books are  Student were also told not to unwrap their book until Christmas day. During their holiday break, the  students were to find their special reading spot,  unwrap their book, open it and try reading a genre they might never have selected for themselves.
