Bio

I was born in Buffalo, NY on September 10, 1959 and lived there till I was six when we moved to Detroit, Michigan. In 1969 we moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina and in 1971 we moved to Missouri. I graduated from North County High School, Desloge, Missouri in the summer of 1977 and went into the Navy in November of that year as a Quartermaster or someone who helps navigate the ship. During my four years in the Navy if visited France, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Italy, Egypt, the Bahamas, Curacao, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Greece. We also took a Great Lakes cruise and visited Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Erie, Pennsylvania. After I got out of the Navy I worked at McDonald's while attending MTSU and majoring in Journalism with minors in History and Political Science. While at MTSU I joined the Naval Reserve and the Delta Tau Delta social fraternity. After graduation I worked at the Lebanon Democrat as a newspaper reporter for a year before joining the Member Service department at Volunteer Energy Cooperative in Decatur, Tennessee where I worked on corporate communications and publications and coordinated the company's youth programs. In 2001, I retired from the Naval Reserve after having visited Japan, Mexico, Canada, Russia, Poland, Belgium, Italy, Croatia, Panama, and Ecuador. The highlight of my Naval Reserve career was transiting the Panama Canal while aboard the USS Jesse L. Brown. In 2001 I left Volunteer Energy Cooperative to get a degree in teaching social studies from Lee University. During this time I also ran a small used bookstore in Cleveland. Since 2005 I have been teaching in the Hamilton County School system and at Brainerd High school since fall of 2006. In 2013 I received an M.ed. in teaching American History. I have been married to my wife, Laurie, since 2009 and I have two college-aged sons, Daniel at MTSU and Sam at Tennessee Tech.
